Concealed Carry

"[Concealed carriers] see their guns as emblems of a whole spectrum of virtuous lifestyle choices - rural over urban, self-reliance over dependence on the collective, vigorous outdoorsiness over pallid intellectualism, patriotism over internationalism, action over inaction - and they hear attacks on guns as attacks on them, personally... From the point of view of gun enthusiasts, it's not gun violence these groups want to end, but gun ownership." -Dan Baum, from Harper's

  1. Interesting concept. The only problem is that anyone who has done any research into gun violence, or deviance in general can tell you that by and large, gun violence is not curtailed by increased gun laws. The problem is that the black market exists, there are not enough resources to close holes through which illegal guns enter America, and the only people who follow gun control laws are law-abiding American citizens. From the point of a graduating senior in Criminology, gun control is about social control. It does not actually effectively decrease gun violence. Case in point: Kennesaw Georgia. Kennesaw, in dealing with a disproportionately high crime rate passed an ordinance requiring homeowners to obtain a firearm. Contrary to what might be expected, violent crime drastically decreased after the passing of this ordinance.

It is a common argument that gun owners, carriers, etc.. are just worried about someone taking away their guns. It just happens to be by and large untrue. We're more worried about losing our lives to someone with an illegal firearm.
